3 DAYS TO BUILD YOUR SUSTAINABLE LEGACY IN 2025 (AND BEYOND)
Innovating the Future: CoffeeCrete – A Sustainable Revolution in Construction
Turning Coffee Waste into Strength for Concrete
In a groundbreaking development with promises to transform the construction industry, researchers at RMIT University in Australia have introduced CoffeeCrete. This innovative material combines the world of daily coffee rituals with eco-efficient construction technologies.
This innovative blend of concrete incorporates coffee waste, increasing the material’s strength and promoting environmental sustainability.
The Force Behind CoffeeCrete
Traditional concrete, a pillar in construction for its durability and versatility, now receives a robust upgrade with CoffeeCrete. The secret lies in used coffee grounds (SCG), which increase its strength by an impressive 30% when processed and mixed with concrete.
This not only paves the way for stronger constructions and infrastructures but also addresses critical environmental concerns by diverting millions of pounds of coffee waste from landfills, thus reducing methane and CO2 emissions.
A Double Benefit: Environmental Impact and Structural Integrity
CoffeeCrete is at the intersection of innovation and environmental management. By replacing a portion of natural sand—a resource extracted from river beds and banks—with biochar derived from coffee waste, CoffeeCrete reduces the environmental damage caused by sand mining and gives a second life to coffee waste.
This double-action approach not only mitigates the construction industry’s ecological footprint but also enhances the structural integrity of the concrete, making it a win-win solution for all.
From Morning Coffee to the Construction Site
Imagine the journey of your morning coffee, from waking you up to underpinning the construction of your home. This vision is closer to reality with CoffeeCrete. The process involves pyrolyzing coffee waste at temperatures between 350 to 500°C, turning it into a biochar that seamlessly integrates with the cement matrix, strengthening the concrete mix.
Next Steps: Field Testing and Wider Adoption
The research team, led by Rajeev Roychand, is now moving forward to field tests in collaboration with companies capable of turning coffee waste into biochar, and construction firms interested in using this enhanced concrete.
The goal is to refine the process and parameters for optimal results, paving the way for wider adoption of CoffeeCrete in various construction projects, from residential foundations to commercial infrastructures.
A Sustainable Path to the Future
CoffeeCrete symbolizes a significant step towards sustainable construction practices, offering a promising solution to the dual challenges of waste management and resource scarcity.
As the construction industry seeks alternatives that align with environmental goals without compromising quality and durability, CoffeeCrete emerges as a beacon of innovation, demonstrating that the future of construction may be grounded in the waste from our daily coffee.

New UGREEN Series and More Than a Lesson
We recently had a special moment here at the company: the recording of new video content by our team the “UGREEN Talks”, which you can see on our Instagram.
Seeing our employees sharing ideas about sustainability and recounting their experiences with us was inspiring. After all, our work goes beyond education; we are deeply involved in projects and consultancies that directly impact the world around us. Providing a space where each person can narrate their journey within the company has been incredibly enriching.
As entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of wanting to do everything ourselves, to shape every detail according to our vision. However, learning to delegate and trust the team to bring their own interpretations to company initiatives not only oxygenates our work environment but also builds a more collective and integrated organization.
The goal of promoting sustainability remains firm, but it is vital that the essence of the company, its soul, continues to pulsate and be authentic.
Building a corporate culture and a collective soul is a process that requires time, patience, and, above all, openness for this culture to develop naturally through the actions and engagement of the team members themselves.
Without a formalized internal culture plan, and being a modest-sized company without external investments, the organic growth and institutionalization of our culture through the daily behavior of our team are reasons for great pride.
This process reinforces the importance of bringing people closer, offering them the opportunity to contribute and grow. The lesson here is clear: if you, as a business leader, find yourself monopolizing decisions and the company’s direction, it may be time to reflect on the possibility of opening up more space for your team.
Allowing the company to flourish with its own identity is crucial for developing a strong collective soul and a culture that truly reflects its values and goals.
Have a great weekend,
