But the solution exists: eliminating these emissions near plantations could recover all this production. David Lobell, the study's author, states: "Reducing coal emissions is one of the quickest actions to save crops." Clean air also means fewer respiratory diseases and healthier communities.

Currently, scientists warn that to limit the temperature rise to 1.5°C – a limit that already seems distant – it is necessary to cut carbon emissions in half compared to 1990 levels. However, among the 195 signatory countries of the Paris Agreement, only a few have updated their plans. UN Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasizes that the quality of the NDCs should take priority over the rush to meet the deadline, but this delay comes at a price: the postponement could undermine the global ambition needed to tackle the climate crisis.

Global political instability also weighs into this equation. The return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States, with his stance of disengagement from environmental goals, creates uncertainty not only for the country – the second-largest historical emitter – but also for international cooperation.
