Case Study: Roca Brasil Cerámica
Roca Brasil Cerámica is a porcelain tile manufacturer with factories located in Brazil. Roca teamed up with UGREEN in 2019 to make their practices more sustainable to help construction companies obtain sustainable certifications.
The first step was to assess the company's sustainability at the time. The first conclusion was that they already had some sustainable practices but needed help to show them to clients and the general public. And this is a concern for many companies since when you commit to a sustainable future, you have to provide transparency to clients, investors, etc., and they might not be prepared for this transparency.
The first sustainability assessment evolved into a Sustainability Report, published yearly on Roca's website with data related to the previous year. The next step was a Life Cycle Assessment of products manufactured in one of Roca’s factories. Finally, an LCA can help its products contribute to sustainable construction certifications, such as LEED.
The first LCA study that UGREEN performed with Roca was finished in 2020, and results showed that emissions from fossil fuels were the main contributors to many impact categories. At the time, the main sources of heat for Roca were natural gas, a clean fossil fuel, and petroleum coke.
From that point onwards, Roca started putting efforts into finding alternative clean fuels, and that search ended in 2021 when Roca stopped using petroleum coke and started using biomass. Biomass is a renewable fuel that can be obtained, for example, from wastes from wood products. Not only that, but Roca shared this new technology with other companies so that they could also take a solid step into a more sustainable future.
